LBChisme | Won’t someone think of the landlords?
3 minute readWe’re back back back again for season two! We all know the rent is too damn high so James and Daniel chisme about Better Housing for Long Beach, a political group of landlords who believe renters have too many rights and that owning rental properties is the gateway to retiring in the Appalachias. And no city or state government is going to get in their way. Here’s an excerpt from the episode:
James: You know, this episode necessarily isn’t about the big developers like BlackRock, or you know, those folks who are like the huge equity companies that are gobbling things up. We’re talking about what you hear of these mom-and-pop landlords.
Daniel: They’re your friends. It’s a grandma. She’s collecting social security, but she also wants a boat, okay?
J: So I want to play a little clip for you from a documentary that we’ve referenced in the pod before that was produced by KCET called “City Rising.” Okay, because Joani [Weir] is actually one of the characters in this whole documentary that’s about gentrification, displacement and actually like, how to fix this shit, you know, okay?
D: She’s one of the characters?
J: She’s one of the characters.
D: Or is she one of the villains?
J: Let’s listen in.
AUDIO CLIP
Joani Weir: Welcome, welcome to better housing for Long Beach action meeting. My name is Joani Weir and I am a property owner in Long Beach and proud to be a member of this team. Better housing….
I started better housing in response to the ordinances that are coming into Long Beach that are going to harm property owners.
Man: Just as a show of hands, are there any landlords here that would like to get rid of good tenants? (Laughs) I don’t see any hands going up. Just cause eviction is what will make that difficult. So if you need to get rid of a problem-causing tenant, you’re not going to be able to do it.
Joani: Someone’s given a 60-day notice they’re not being evicted. They’re asked to find another place. When you buy a car when you rent a home there’s a contract you sign. You’re saying you don’t have rights; renters have more rights than property owners.
END CLIP
James: That is Joani Weir…..(laughs)
Daniel: I am boiling with rage.
J: I told you earlier that you are going to be so mad this entire episode.
D: There are things right now that I want to say that I can’t say. […] Good god, dude. Let’s just say Dead Kennedys had some bangers, and they got a couple about landlords and those are the ones I’m thinking of right now.
J: Soo…..
D: Won’t someone think of the landlords!
