LBChisme | LGBT and LBPD
1 minute readLong Beach is home to queer icons, bars, and rainbow-colored crosswalks. But is Long Beach as queer-friendly as it makes out to be? On the final LBChisme episode of the season, James and Daniel are joined by Phillip Zonkel, co-founder and publisher of Q Voice News, to dig into the Long Beach Police Department’s hundred-year history of targeting and terrorizing gay men.
The discriminatory arrests and prosecution of gay men for lewd conduct continued under Mayor Robert Garcia and former LBPD Chief Robert Luna and only ended in 2016 when a superior court judge ruled that Long Beach police violated the U.S. Constitution and sought to “portray homosexual men as sexual deviants and pedophiles.” The city and those who oversaw these arrests have never issued a formal apology to the gay community.
